Meet my friend Emily Moberly. Currently, she is a nominee for San Diego’s Woman of the Year 2015. Why, you may ask? She is the founder of Traveling Stories – “a 501c3 nonprofit organization that specializes in creating experiences where families fall in love with reading!”. In short, she found a way to give back to the community by creating an organization that gets kids to love reading books.

I first met Emily a couple of years back during one of my birthday celebrations. She is fun, smart, passionate and most of all very caring about her cause. Did you know that:

“83% of children from low-income families in America cannot read proficiently at grade level by the time they reach 4th grade. This makes them 13 times more likely to leave school without a diploma.”

— NAEP

Even I didn’t know that statistic! It’s very saddening to hear that considering in my generation we grew up and lived off learning to love reading books! Reading is a very powerful capability, and I think its time we all need to raise literacy awareness.

I’m glad that after all these years we’ve kept in touch. Today was the first time in a long time that I got to hang out with her and I’m very glad we did! As a child, I LOVED READING BOOKS. When I was a child, I even wanted to write my own books.( I guess even writing my blog can be considered one.) It’s a shame that many kids don’t have the passion, and or necessary programs to get them to spark their imagination.

Which is why, I am happy that I reached out to Emily to see if I could help with her cause. So I am happy to say that I am glad to now be a part of the Traveling Stories Team!
